Between Calls

Between Calls is a photographic study of presence, stillness, and proximity within Aotearoa’s native birdlife. Captured in low light, these portraits move away from traditional wildlife photography toward a quieter form of observation.

Isolated against darkness, each subject occupies a suspended space between visibility and disappearance. These works consider native birds not as specimens, but as living presences carrying memory, atmosphere, and ecological weight. Through restrained composition, the photographs suggest the landscape through texture, reflection, and edge.
